“Heaven on the hill” - as Der Spiegel, the famous German weekly political magazine, called Siegen University campus in a recent ranking of universities – offers ideal conditions for learning, lecturing and research. Currently, around 1,400 students in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science stand to profit from this.

Bachelor Computer Science

Today's society is permeated by technical innovations. Progress rapidly follows progress and acceleration continues to increase. From apps for smartphones to on-board computers in cars and power plant control systems, the disciplines of computer science and electrical engineering ensure the smooth, safe and convenient use of technology everywhere.
In the first three semesters, students learn several programming and modeling languages as well as mathematical, theoretical and technical basics. Building on this, a total of seven core subjects in computer science are then to be studied, e.g. operating systems, computer networks, computer architectures, database systems, software engineering and computer graphics, as well as one hardware, one programming and one core specialisation internship each.
In addition to this core area of computer science, a quarter of the study volume is reserved for an area of application or specialisation. Students can choose between Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Medical Computer Science, Visual Computing and Software Engineering.
The aim of the education is to impart a sufficient spectrum of methods and basics for a professional activity in projects for the development of software or digital hardware. The students are supervised by professorial mentors in their choice of subjects. Building on the Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree is offered.

Bachelor Electrical Engineering

The Bachelor's programme in Electrical Engineering is fundamental and method-oriented. It mediates within 6 semesters of study all Fundamentals and methods qualifying for a profession, essential for the solution of problems in the field of electrical engineering. A deepening only takes place in the Master's program. A further goal is the Teaching of key qualifications such as communication and teamwork skills, presentation and Moderation skills. A high value is placed on that the students will have a well-founded subject and System knowledge in the core areas of electrical engineering which is taught through the basic modules. This enables the understanding and analysis of connections in the electrotechnical systems.

CHE ranking: The field of electrical engineering has made it to the top in several application criteria. In the category "research funds" per scientist, electrical engineering scored well. Electrical engineering also achieved top results in terms of support at the start of studies and in the international orientation of the master's courses. In the field of electrical engineering, the extent to which theory and practice are interlinked was also rated very highly.

Electrical engineering reached the top group six times in the U-Multirank.

Master Computer Science

The Master's programme in Computer Science is research-oriented, deepens core issues of the computer science and imparts the ability to use methods and Procedure for solving problems in the field of expertise to (further) develop information technology and to implement it appropriately. A further goal is the mediation of key qualifications such as presentation and Moderation skills. The M.Sc. Informatik aims at in particular the ability to carry out scientific and technical work in research and development and for the responsible assumption of management positions in software and hardware development projects.

The Master's programme contains a specialisation in which a selected area of computer science is deepened (45 ECTS lecture modules, project group with 20 ECTS, Master's thesis). The focus should preferably be selected from one of the following standard models:

  • Embedded Systems (English) focuses on concepts, development methods and technologies for embedded systems used to control physical devices such as mobile phones, automotive engines or industrial robots. Specific requirements such as real-time capability and reliable operation are of particular importance.

  • Visual Computing (English) deals with methods of image generation and image analysis, especially with computer graphics, image processing, visualization, computer vision, pattern recognition and virtual and augmented reality. These topics play a central role in applications such as quality control, medical image processing and visualization, autonomous robotics, multimedia systems, film and television industry, and computer games.

  • Medical Computer Science provides an in-depth education in the field of computer science for applications in medical diagnostics and therapy as well as the structure of health care and is equivalent to a master's degree in medical computer science. As a rule, a bachelor's degree in medical computer science is required for this course of studies, whereby computer science bachelor's graduates with other specialisations are offered a transitional model.

  • Software Engineering broadens and deepens the competences in all core areas of computer science, especially in the area of programming techniques and the efficient development of software.

  • Theoretical computer science gives a deeper insight into methods from logic, algorithmics and complexity theory and deals with applications in the areas of formal verification of hardware/software systems, compiler construction and data compression.

Master Electrical Engineering

The Master's programme in Electrical Engineering is research-oriented and provides in-depth knowledge of the scientific principles and methods of electrical engineering. During the Master's programme, the engineering, information science, mathematical and scientific knowledge already acquired in the previous Bachelor's programme is to be deepened in order to be able to meet the requirements of an engineer working independently in the field of development and research or in industry or research institutions.

The Master's programme in Electrical Engineering aims at a Specialization in a thematically focused area which are offered in the form of so-called study programme variants. The following program variants will be offered for the Master's course in Electrical Engineering at the University of Siegen:

  • Automation and energy technology
  • Communications technology
  • Microsystems engineering
  • James Clerk Maxwell (research master)
  • Intelligent Energy Systems (binational with the Universidad Nacional de San Juan, Argentina)

Master Mechatronics

The English-language 4-semester course is structured in such a way that students must first take selected adaptation subjects, the composition of which is adapted to the different previous knowledge of the subject from the previous first degree.

Afterwards, basic knowledge in integration subjects from the fields of electrical engineering, computer science and mechanical engineering is taught. They are then deepened by interdisciplinary topics in mechatronics in specific subjects that are important for the design of electromechanical systems.

In the final semester, in addition to completing the Master's thesis, students must take technical and non-technical elective courses, which are selected from the existing range of English-language lectures offered by the participating departments as well as other departments.

Mechatronic also achieved top results in terms of support at the beginning of the course and in the international orientation of the master's courses.
