  • Operation Reliability for Matrix Converters

The research project deals with the matrix converter (figure 1) which belongs to the group of direct converters. A specific attribute of direct converters is the missing DC link.

Fig. 1: Matrix Converter Topology

This results in many advantages but also some disadvantages. The greatest benefit is the possibility of energy conversion in both directions, from the net and back to the supplying network, in a simple way. The biggest handicap of the matrix converter is the liability to the destruction of device components. Therefore complex control methods and safety precautions are necessary for running this type of converters. In this project the matrix converter gets an override for the first time which deflects the current on demand so that its components are not damaged. Because of this attribute there is no need for complex commutation- and control methods in order to run the matrix converter reliable. Previous simulation results carry this approach, further investigations and measurement results shall verify it. For this purpose a matrix converter with switchable free wheeling path is developed and its new properties are investigated in this project.
