"Application of the Z-Converter for Small-Hydro Power Generation"

This work deals with the utilization of the single phase Z-Converter in low power small-hydro power systems. The Z-Converter can be operated as a conventional converter but besides it allows the generation of a PWM (pulse width modulated) output voltage with an amplitude larger than in the conventional case. So it combines the features of a boost converter and a PWM-inverter in a single topology.

The Z-Converter employs a Z-shaped LC network instead of the dc-link capacitor and allows a shoot-through of the switches of the half bridges in order to boost the voltage. Due to these special characteristics the converter is immune to shoot-throughs and thus very robust and appropriate for applications in harsh environments.

The ongoing investigations examine the capabilities of the Z-Converter for the power conversion in systems, in which the prime mover generates a variable voltage like in the case of small hydro turbines. After the characterisation of the turbine in collaboration with the FWU the control electronics is being designed with help of simulations and laboratory measurements on a prototype.
