Psychophysics of the human visual system
Psychophysics of the human visual system
Variability in small dimension transistors leads to fixed pattern noise in digital cameras, which has to be corrected. The question, which can be raised here, is what happens in natural image sensors, that is the human eye? Does it have any fixed pattern noise? Does each rod and cone differ from one another and the human brain somehow compensates for it? We do have diseases and procedures, whereby the human eye looses its ability to differentiate contrast, similar to what happens in a camera with fixed pattern noise. Hence ...
This question, however, may be be too ambitious. Nevertheless, there is a condition, known as amblyopia, wherein the two visual pathway show mismatch. Hence, we ended up studying the primary cortex of the human brain to understand amblyopia and how information is transferred from one visual field to another. This led to the identification of the sites of inter ocular adaptation in the human brain. Future research would involve further investigation of the two pathways as well as other conditions in the human visual systems. The dream is to make an artificial system capable of capturing a picture and video in the same way the human eye does....
Programs
The program 'Ananas in fMRI' was designed using Microsoft Visual C++ compiler with Directx7 libraries. The program and various manuals are available in public domain. Click here to access them. I chose the name 'Ananas', as it means the same in Hindi, German and Romanian, the mother tongues of the people involved in this project.

Society
And finally, as engineers, we are interested on how the society evolves around us. This, for us includes area of digital divide, higher education and finance. From time to time, we have taken some effort to publish these ideas.
