Microelectronic Sensors

It is a masters level course generally taught in the Winter semester every year.

Module leader: Prof. Dr. B. Choubey

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. B. Choubey and colleagues

Language: English

Learning Outcomes

The course is dedicated to integration of physical sensors with microelectronic circuits. The students will first understand the concepts of physical measurements as well as various sources of errors. They will be able to analyse and differentiate between different type of sensors for the same physical phenomenon. They will also learn advanced circuit concepts to interface these sensors. Finally, they will analyse advanced concepts of at least two different sensing systems. The first will be optical sensors, particularly CMOS image sensors and its various circuits and applications. The second will be microelectromechanical sensors, including concepts of mechanical and chemical sensing along with their integration with microelectronic circuits.

Syllabus

  • Physical quantities and their measurement
  • Measurement Errors and concepts of Sensitivity/ Precision/ Resolution/ Accuracy/ Bias/random errors, Calibration standards
  • Optical Sensors – CCD and CMOS image sensors
  • Microelectromechanical sensors – types, fabrication methods, simulation and design, testing
